Our Year at a Glance
Welcome to Second Grade! I am looking forward to getting to know you and your children. I pray and trust that God will bless all of us with many good things this year.
Our beginning days will revolve around the theme of friendship. We will be praying, talking, and doing some activities that will remind us that we will be treating each other with respect, love, and peace this year. We will also be working on manners: “excuse me”, “please”, “thank you”, etc.
Religion
Your child’s formation in faith is very important to me. I am very happy to be your partner as we share our belief in Jesus and our Catholic faith with your child. This is a wonderful year for the second graders. In addition to learning about our Catholic faith, we will learn about the healing Sacrament of Reconciliation and receiving Jesus in the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist.
Sacrament Information
I will be preparing the children in the classroom for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. Coordination of both Reconciliation and First Holy Communion events is done through the St.Christina Parish Religious Education Coordinator, Mrs. Sue Carter. Mrs. Carter will be communicating with you concerning Parent Meetings and Parent/Child events.
Mrs. Carter can be contacted at (773)445-9539. Her email address is [email protected].
Reading
We use the Treasures series which follows the Common Core Standards.
Phonics and Spelling
The phonics program we use is the Discovering Intensive Phonics program.
Spelling is a component of our Treasures reading program. Each story includes a phonetic pattern that will be studied. The spelling words that will be studied are based on that pattern.
Science and Social Studies
Science and Social Studies will be taught alternately. In Science we study living things and their habitats. We study communities in Social Studies.
Math
We use the My Math series which follows the Common Core Standards.
Language Arts
Throughout the year we will be working on parts of speech, sentence writing, and formal writing assignments. Daily Oral Language, which provides daily review of punctuation, capitalization, and other essential writing skills, will be done daily to practice and reinforce writing skills.
Printing/Cursive
I ask that the children do not write in cursive until we begin instruction. Our goal is neatness in printing.
